It's really a question of what you want to do, photo or video. If you already have a good SLR camera (and you do), I would be hard-pressed to recommend a Nikonos over housing your existing camera. Housed SLRs are powerful systems, giving you flexibility, convenience, and control that you just can't get with a Nikonos rig. They're also extremely reliable, especially if you exert a tiny bit of care & maintenance. I have made upwards of 250 dives with my housed Nikon N90s (Ikelite housing), and have never had a flood--knock on wood!

If you're worried about the disastrous consequences of a flood, well, you can buy insurance against that possibility. I have an "all loss" rider on my homeowners insurance that covers my equipment against even floods. You can also get camera insurance through DEPP (search www.google.com for DEPP) that specifically covers floods.

Video housings are similarly reliable. If you would prefer to shoot video over stills, there's no reason not to house your video camera. FWIW, I am toying with the idea of buying a housing for my Canon Optura Pi mini-DV camera. I have no qualms about diving with such a system, nor should you. But really, insure the thing before you dive, just for peace of mind.

Good luck, and be sure to tell us what you decide!
