Most cameras read the DX code with a set of metal pins that contact the surface of the film canister. You'll find them on the left side of the camera, in the well where the film can sits.

Anyway, dirty contacts can easily result in a mis-read of the DX code. Start by wiping them with a clean cloth and see if that helps. If it doesn't, you might try rubbing them gently with a pencil eraser. If you try the eraser trick, be careful not to let any rubber shavings get into the camera's workings....holding the camera over your head and rubbing the contacts upside down would probably be a good thing to try.
