I never use the limit switch. At least on purpose. It will reduce the AF time and reduce the hunting time, which is annoying on the 105mm. I did leave it on accidentally on one dive. I had been shooting the lens in low light the night before. The dive was ruined since the limit was set to shoot the more distant focus range.

There is not greater magnification. The lens can be set to limit itself to either of two ranges covering the existing focus range of the lens. Turn it on while in the closest focus distance and you will not be able to focus to infinity.

There would be no point to using the limit switch in manual focus.
