Also, check the pages here on this web site for a detailed guide to exposure concepts. Most of what's here is still relevant for digital photography.

The basic ideas are these:
(a) if the camera has a close-up automatic mode, try using it. If not, go into aperture-preferred mode (also known as "A mode") and pick a high aperture number -- f/8 at least, but higher if you can get away with it. Check the camera to see if it thinks it got enough light from the flash after every frame. If not, go to a lower aperture number.
(b) definitely force the flash to fire every time.
(c) shoot some pictures on land first to make sure you understand how to operate the thing. Flowers, insects, coins, whatever. It's cheap (i.e. free) to do this with digital cameras, so practicing ahead of time is a good idea.
