I'm thinking probably not, as teleconverters often have electrical/mechanical linkages allowing autofocus/exposure etc to continue. DOF etc is still going to suffer, as it would above water, but for extreme magnifications it may be a better way to go. I recall rooster on the D2D board posting ultra-macro shots taken with teleconverters on his F100, IIRC he was using up to an additional 4x.
