Well, that's the nub, isn't it?

We dive mostly in Lake Travis, which is, er, not conducive to U/W photography (though I've seen some good pics... cp's shot of a channel cat, posted on D2D not too long ago, was loaded with personality). U/W photography for us is limited to Flower Garden trips, rig dives, and Coz. With two kids, we don't get to take a lot of long dive vacations.

On the other hand, I keep feeling that we'd enjoy U/W photography a lot more if we had a better camera. We shoot a roll of film per dive when we're in the ocean, and throw away about 96% of it. What's left ain't great, either--it's just less bad than the rest. Since we never know what we've got till the trip's over, it's kinda hard to work on technique. The instant feedback and the ability to make room for more shots by tossing out the obviously bad ones immediately--these are the things that make digital attractive.

Maybe I should be looking at the 3020 instead of the 4040? I'm a bit of a tightwad, but when I do let go of my money, I want to buy the best I can afford. The question, I suppose, is whether we'll get any benefit from the difference in quality/features between the 3020 and the 4040. Obviously, more pixels = better, but apart from that, is the 4040 significantly better? Is it "better" in a way that we, as beginners, will be able to take advantage of?

(I know, I know--the answer is "it depends." Heheh.)

Any thoughts?
