As a warning, I don't really know a lot about strobes (thanks to fast film and reasonably fast lenses above water) so my problem may be a result of my foolishness.

Last night I was playing around with my "new" Ikelite 300 on my kitchen table. Setting it on TTL and shooting apeture priority on the camera, I took several shots keeping all of the settings and camera/strobe positions identical. I would have expected the strobe to fire at basically the same level each time, however every once in a while the strobe would fire at a markedly lower power level. (less than than 1/4 on manual) In fact, it barely looked like the light tube lit up. I think I was leaving plenty of time for recycle.

To check to make sure it wasn't the camera, I hooked up my Elan 7e and repeated the test with the same results. Does anyone have any ideas or have you had similar experiences?

The strobe is rather old. Perhaps the nicads are too old?

hmmmm. Does there need to be film in the camera for TTL to function? The camera was unloaded.
