...for decades. I can remember seeing Sony "MarinePack" housings for their video cameras in the 80s. I didn't dive then, so I had no idea what they were for, but...

Anyway, faster sampling is of questionable value if you're using a flash. Most flashes dump their light in ~1/4000 sec, which pretty much freezes the action. Besides, if you were to clamp down the effective shutter speed, you'd just have to open up the aperture to get a decent background anyway. Mostly I find that I shoot at 1/60 or 1/90 @ f/5.6 or f/8, so fast shutter speeds aren't much good to me.
