I think the trend toward not using grease on the O-ring is that people went overboard. The grease does not make the seal waterproof but is there to keep the O-ring pliable and retard dry rot. Too many people were putting heavy doses of grease on the O-Rings and this is bad as it attracts and holds whatever comes in contact with it like hair, lint, sand, etc. I usally put a little dab on my fingers and pull the O-Ring through then run the O-Ring through a clean lint free cloth.
As for your batteries I believe that memory thing was just on earlier batteries of this type. Partial charges should not hurt them but if it would make you fill better take some time to pull them completely down and recharge fully every so often. The good Docotor probably could give you a better answer though.
