OK, now that I've thoroughly mastered the camera in an hour :), I've now got to start training my better half on this thing.

She's got the mechanics of the camera buttons down, but now must grapple with exposure control. She's sat through my photo workshop lecture, but isn't into exposure control and sucks at math and fractions. She's finely got a grasp on shutter speed and aperture.

I've got all my preset options set (will work on white balance when we get there). Now, to adjust the exposure, we've got three things we can do (skip EV, it's clumsy on this camera). I want to keep it simple, as in use one option to adjust. Here's my thoughts. Give me some feedback.

1) Strobe power setting. Easy to change, but the incremental steps from 1/8 to 1/4, etc. may be too steep.

2) Shutter speed. My preferred mode of shooting is aperture priority, but it wasn't working well in the pool. I couldn't tell you why. I just could't get it to work well consistently. It might work better in the ocean with more ambient light. I switched to manual and found it easier to get where I wanted. So, in manual mode I did some experimenting. I found that one stop of shutter speed change also had a big impact, often going from under to overexposed. Adjusted in conjuntion with f/stop worked well.

3) Aperture. In manual mode, if I set the shutter to 1/60 or 1/125 and start adjusting aperture to get the right exposure, I can get there easier. Moving the dial gives me small incremental changes in f/stop.

So, I'm thinking, set strobe power, set shutter speed, have dial on aperture and let her deal with this one adjustment up or down to get the right exposure. Downside is controlling depth of field.

What do you think?

Also, how does one calculate DOF on these digicams?

Also, is there a quick home diffuser I can make for the SS-200?

I will definitely switch to digital as soon as an SLR with the right pixels, price and housing is available.

As much as I'm impressed with my setup, I have some common complaints and some comments + (0)
