Thanks for the comments! I replied to your message on RSD but I don't know if you saw it, so here's a recap.

I shoot E100VS at ISO 100 and get the backgrounds just the way I want them. However, some people like darker water than I do, or your meter might be a little off. Either way, the easy solution is to change the film speed in the camera. Override the DX setting and set the film speed to ISO 125 or 150 and you'll be fine. I wouldn't go much higher than 150, though.

By way of clarification, you said 'I was using the "matrix" multi-segment metering of the N6006 to establish an aperture.' Does this mean you were shooting in shutter-preferred mode and letting the camera pick an aperture? If so, I highly recommend you do it the other way: shoot in aperture-preferred mode, where *you* set the aperture and the camera sets the shutter speed to give you balanced background. This will let you nail down the aperture for setting a manual strobe exposure. If your camera has a "slow sync" mode, this is even better, as the camera will use any shutter speed it thinks it needs -- up the sync ceiling, of course.

If you don't have a "slow sync" mode, you might have to set things iteratively by picking an aperture (pick something reasonable, like f/5.6 or f/8), let the camera pick a shutter, and then check to make sure that shutter is not too slow or too fast. If it is, then open or close the aperture (respectively) and try again.

Good luck,
D
