Thanks for the reply, Dave. I'm no Photoshop expert but I have been using the levels manually. Like you, I also have experienced too many undesireable results using the Auto level option. I use the manual level control using the red channel first instead of the RGB channel. This seems to work IF you have some residual red in the picture.

I have also tried boosting the red channel CURVES but have not been able to get very satisfactory results. I was trying to create the reciprocal for the red wavelength absorbtion profile but it doesn't seem to work.

I was also interested in color replacement. I was wondering if a red could be substituted for a partciular shade of blue similar to the way that old B&W movies are colorized. I don't even know if this is possible with Photoshop(also, judging from the bad results that I've seen on some of the old B&W movies when this technique was used, maybe I should forget this option !).

I was hoping someone else had tried these ideas and I wouldn't have to reinvent the wheel. I just bought Jim Church's book on composition and love it; thanks for the tip. Now if we could just get him to write one on using Photoshop on U/W pictures...
