Modeling lights inside strobes are often inadequate, because the spot it not wide or bright enough. Also, getting the light on the subject requires a 2-D strobe positioning operation, which is really difficult to do while you're looking through the viewfinder.

A modeling light attached to the housing is a much better idea, because you can send it out more or less parallel with the lens and then you only need to tilt it up or down to compensate for subject distance. This operation is easily doable while looking through the viewfinder.

This is the setup I use for macro shooting at night...
