I'd have to sit down with an optics textbook and refresh my meager knowledge of the subject, but IIRC a +4 diopter will reduce the minimum focus distance by ~25%.

My advice is just to go buy the Canon f/2.5 50mm macro lens. Nikon's 60mm macro is only a ~$300 part, so I would assume the Canon lens is in the same ballpark.
