Don,
The F2 has taken many great UW images and chances are if you have seen any of Carl Rosseler's or Flip Nicklin's work (among many others) they were taken with the F2. It ruled the roost for many years until the F3 came out. You can still find some good bargains on ebay for the Oceanic Housings that seemed to be a favorite for housing this camera. Check this link out.

The big advantage with housing the F series cameras from Nikon is the ability to use the Action Finder and most housings were/are set up for this feature....so you would have to purchase one of these babies as well and they don't come cheap.. even used ones for the F2 are pricey $150+ maybe.
Soooo.. adding up cost of Action Finder + Motor Drive (not neccessary but again you are in a line of professional cameras and most housings were set up for this feature) and cost of housing + various ports you would be better off to probably spend the money in the digital arena if that is where you are going.
I can't speak for digital as at this time I love my film for underwater. I am hoping to use either the Fuji S1-S2 or the new D100 in a housing in the near future though.
Good Luck with whatever path you choose and welcom to the exciting world of underwater photography...and remember there are only two kinds of UW photographers... Those that have flooded a camera and those that are going to. : ) I belong to the first group BTW.
