Subject:Domes, diopters and distortion...

After WAY too long dry, I got my housed SLR in the water recently while in the Pacific North West. I used the Nikon 24mm f2.8 behind a dome port, and a +4 diopter. Looking at the workable slides, it is noticable that some have soft to smeared corners.

I know this was an issue that had some discussion a while back. Can anyone come up with any recommendations (besides buying a Nikonos and 15mm :-) ) to help avoid this? I remember seeing a photo by Larry Lozuk using a diopter behind a dome that had distortion way worse than I am seeing, and also I remember Dave asking if anyone had tried this (ie using 4+ diopter behind an Ikelite dome port), however I thought that these questions referred to the 20mm Nikon lens, not the 24.

Am I going to be better off diopter free behind the dome? Should I go with a flat port (and lose some coverage)?

Advice and ruminations gratefully received.
