With any diopter you lose sharpness. With multi-element achromatic lenses, you lose a lot less, but pay much more.
I usually get softness around the edges with diopters. If you are getting distortion or field curvature, that's a lens/dome issue.

I find the 24mm lens much easier to work with than the 20mm. I also find the images much sharper.
