an explaination for the two arcs in the corner of each shot? This is why I had thought that it wasn't backscatter. I could make a guess that this is also an artifact from the lens and having strobe too far forward (i.e. a 'flare' of some kind). Is that likely?

BTW, I had been shooting close-up stuff when we saw the big loggerhead. I very quickly put the wa lens on and swung the strobe arm out...but it had been rotated forward for the closer shots. I have no doubt that you're exactly right that I didn't pull it back to where it should be.
