Dave's advice makes perfect sense to me although watch out that you don't move the stobe too far back and start getting light bouncing around in the casing. I've also tried hand holding the strobe out further to the side and gotten good results but have also gotten into trouble when my aim was off.

Photoshop 7 has improved tools for noise reduction in those pictures you already have problems with although $100+ for the upgrade is steep. I've upgraded and would be glad to try a couple of test pictures for you.

BTW could you see the arcs and specks on the LCD while you were under water?

I forgot to mention the key clue, it only happened with the WA addapter lens. (+) (0)
