My best guess is that you're seeing some sort of internal reflection from the lens. If the strobe were far enough forward, it's entirely possible that direct light from the strobe head could hit the lens and give you strange reflections. Remember that the entire job of a WA lens is map as much as possible of the world in front of the lens onto the imaging surface (chemical or electronic). As such, the lens will "see" a lot of stuff that you didn't anticipate and then do *things* you wouldn't anticipate with that light.

Remember all the oddball reflection problems the Aquashot line has had over the years? All of those were from unexpected light paths within the housing, and they frequently manifested themselves in ways similar to your effect.

In this case, my bet is that you're seeing reflections from the lens's external mounting ring, although that's just a WAG. I would have said that it was probably from the 4040's internal strobe except that you have some pictures without the arcs, while you' expect reflections from the internal strobe to appear all the time if they appeared at all.

Anyway, I'll further bet that moving the strobe head behind the lens will ensure that all light hitting the lens comes from the subject and not from a direct path from the strobe, and your problem will disappear.

Good luck,
D

I forgot to mention the key clue, it only happened with the WA addapter lens. (+) (0)
