I'm pretty sure that if you look at the control deck of your camera, you'll see the AE indicator switch to 'spot' mode as soon as you turn on your strobe. As for other details, hang tight until I can check out my N90s manual and tell you what I learn.

The sad but honest truth is that I'm not 100% sure about how all the AE stuff works. I knew the details at one point, but the freakin' N90s just nails the exposure so routinely (even u/w) that the details of how it was doing it became unimportant and got flushed from my head. :) I just leave the thing on A mode, pick an aperurture that does what I need (strobe-matching for WA, DOF for macro) and let the N90s do the rest.

FWIW, the super-duper matrix metering only works if you a D lens *and* a strobe that can do the calibrated pre-flash. AFAIK, no underwater strobe on the market can do this (maybe the new Ikelite digital strobes, but I doubt it), so you don't get the same matrix metering u/w that you'd get with a D lens and an SB-26 or -28. In addition, the refractive effects from the lens ports will certainly roast the D lens's usefulness, so I wouldn't count on the system working even if you had a compatible strobe u/w.

Stay tuned...
