(1) Spot for macro. I think the camera does this automagically when it detects a strobe.

(2) WA: 'A' mode all the way, baby. No need for an AE lock, either. I set the aperture, let the camera pick a shutter, and all I do is verify shutter speed is > 1/15 sec or so. This technique lets me nail down an aperture so I can control my strobe power, but the camera gets to do the grunt work of finding a shutter to give good ambient. The N90s is freakishly good at this.

(3) Each step is one stop. 1/2 power is one stop less light than full power, and one stop more than 1/4. Check these URLs for more info:
