Primarily in macro photography or with subjects that fill most of the frame, matrix or multi-spot metering can give a better overall exposure than spot. Let's say I'm taking a closely cropped picture of you in a baggy purple polo shirt. The shirt may have folds or bends where shadows may develop. Where is your spot meter going to be? My face, highly lit area of the shirt, or perhaps darker purple area of your shirt. I can pick something in the middle of the contrast range, spot measure and lock, or I can matrix meter and get an well averaged exposure on your entire figure. Where it fails, (without exposure adjustment) is if the negative space itself is heavily weighted to one extreme or the other.

I've noticed some burn out in the foreground, e.g. sand, of my underwater macro shots and thought that matrix metering might reduce the exposure a tad versus spot on the subject.
