The ESP metering is more like what you describe where it "looks at a variety of areas in the subject area for proper overall exposure" (from the manual).

With multi-spot metering, you actually put the spot metering on each place you want to meter and hit the exp lock button. Every time one is selected, it averages it with the previous ones. In other words, I can select any set of 8 or less points by pointing the camera and hitting the button. I can see where this would serve the purpose of what you describe but it's less than automatic :)

BTW Whaletale, did you see my post on D2D about the SS200 diffuser. I got one from Ikelite by mistake that you can have if you want it. At least I think it's the one for the SS200. Let me know if your interested.
