1) I shoot aperture priority, just like day time. Shooting macro with a long lens (105mm) DOF is important, so I MUST shoot f/22, perhaps f/16. If you look at your camera's meter with your strobe off, you will see the ridiculously long shutter speeds you mention. This is true during the day, also. Now, turn your strobe on. The shutter speed just went to the minimum flash sync speed for the camera. End of discussion.

2) TTL works at night for macro. It STILL doesn't work right for wide angle.

I only shoot macro at night. Remember, the only thing that will show up on film without really long exposure times is what your strobes light up. Everything else will be black. It's hard to compose a wide angle shot when your dive light or aiming light can't light up the angle that your lens can see.

3) Your dive light or aiming light will have no impact on your shot, so leave them on. Your strobe will overpower them.
