lots of dollars...ok, maybe just lots of dollars. And it's all for fun, I wouldn't let work have a piece of this trip for any price.

I'm not bringing a laptop with me. I considered it but packing constraints ruled it out. Instead I'll have 4-128MB Smartmedia cards and the 16MB card that came with the camera. That's enough to hold around 500 shots at the quality I usually take or around 200 of the next higher (less compressed) level. My Olympus has A/V output and the liveaboard has a TV so I should be able to view the images on that. It's nothing like seeing them on a computer but at least I can see a bigger version of the image than on the LCD.

As for cataloging the images, I really don't have any dedicated software for that. I have yet to accumulate a huge number of digital images so I'm sure I won't bother until it's too late : ) My basic strategy is to archive all of the originals onto CD-ROM as soon as I get home. Hopefully I can organize them some way using directory structure. Not only is it a good idea to keep the unaltered images of course, but the original files contain data such as time/date stamp, shutter speed, aperture setting, quality setting, zoom setting, metering mode, exposure mode, and exposure bias. If you open and save the image it will lose most if not all of this information. There are several nice programs to extract this information, I use Picture Information Extractor (PIE) which can be downloaded.

An interesting thing that I've thought about with digicams. I could synchronize the clocks on my camera and my (downloadable) computer. Later when I got the info from the computer I could not only say which dive I was on from the time stamp but how far into the dive, how deep I was, what my nitrogen loading was, and how much air I had left when the photo was taken. I'm not sure any of this matters but a really anal retentive photographer could have a blast!

Sex shops? I know nothing about any sex shops in Thailand ;;; ) And as for Myannmar, they charged me $140 in "clean, undamaged, recently minted US notes" just to cross the border in a boat. I say if they still run the government via bribery, they're still Burma.
